What Happened On This Day In LDS Church History? On this day in LDS Church History, in 1846, the ship Brooklyn leaves New York City, sailing to California with 238 Latter-day Saints on board. Also, the exodus from Nauvoo begins when the Charles Shumaway family are the first to cross the Mississippi River from Nauvoo.
