WHOTDILCH 1 December

What Happened on this day in LDS Church History? On this day in LDS Church History in 1861, Latter-day Saint pioneers founded St. George, Utah. The states of the South and North had entered into war. Brigham Young "called" about 300 families at October General Conference to move to the Dixie mission (St. George area) to grow cotton. Sent by Brigham Young and under the direction of Erastus Snow, these pioneers established what became known as the "Cotton Mission."

What Happened on this day in LDS Church History? On this day in LDS Church History in 1869, in the Lion House in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young organized his daughters to lead the Young Ladies' Department of the Cooperative Retrenchment Association, which later became the Young Women's Auxiliary of the church. Brigham Young asked the General Relief Society President of the church, Eliza R. Snow, to form retrenchment organizations in each ward. There was no General Presidency for the retrenchment associations at that time. 'The word 'retrenchment' in the original name reflects Brigham Young’s desire that they 'retrench in everything that is bad and worthless, and improve in everything that is good and beautiful … to live so that you may be truly happy in this life and the life to come' (History of the Young Ladies’ Mutual Improvement Association, 9–10). Retrenchment meant more than adopting a simpler lifestyle; it meant a change of heart. Eliza R. Snow said: “What do I want to retrench from? It is my ignorance and every thing that is not of God” (Daughters in My Kingdom [2011], 45).
