What Happened On This Day In LDS Church History?
On this day in LDS Church History, in 1849, in two British sailors, who were also step brothers, named George Barber and Benjamin Richey (Riches), were baptized in England. They were baptized just before their ship sailed to Calcutta, India. These two men did not hold the priesthood and were very new to the church. They became the first two members of the church to visit India and also became the first two missionaries (every member a missionary!) to India. While waiting for their ship to load in Calcutta, they found a local congregation called the Plymouth Brethren congregation. These two step brothers shared what they knew of the Gospel with the congregation. They generated interest among several members of the congregation. However, since George and Benjamin did not have the priesthood and could not baptize, or could they organize the church there. Upon returning to England they asked that missionaries be sent to Calcutta so these people could be taught and baptized.

What Happened On This Day In LDS Church History?
On this day in LDS Church History, in 1839, Brigham Young, along with several other members of the Quorum of the Twelve, held a conference to devise a plan to help the poor and stranded evacuate from Missouri.
In the fall of 1838, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs of Missouri had issued and Extermination Order, for the saints to leave Missouri or be killed. In November 1838 the prophet, Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, Sidney Rigdon, Lyman Wight, Alexander McRae, and Caleb Baldwin had been imprisoned on false charges. In January, they were still being held. The members of the Quorum of the twelve who called the meeting wanted to make sure those without means to leave to safety, would be provided a means to flee. A committee of seven was chosen to oversee the evacuation of the poor and stranded. Brigham you was one of the seven. With the prophet in Liberty Jail, Brigham Young, as senior apostle led the evacuation of Saints from Missouri to Illinois.
