What Happened on this day in LDS Church History? On this day in LDS Church History in 1861, Latter-day Saint pioneers founded St. George, Utah. The states of the South and North had entered into war. Brigham
Young "called" about 300 families at October General Conference to move
to the Dixie mission (St. George area) to grow cotton. Sent by Brigham
Young and under the direction of Erastus Snow, these pioneers
established what became known as the "Cotton Mission."
