What Happened on this day in LDS Church History? On this Day in LDS Church History in Ghana, Africa in 1978, the first LDS missionaries arrive. Two senior missionary couples were sent to Ghana to open the mission: Elder and Sister Rendell N. Mabey, and Elder and Sister Edwin Q. Cannon, Jr. Soon they baptized eighty-nine people who had been waiting for the church to send missionaries. Some had been waiting many, many years for missionaries. Over 400 new members were baptized that first year. Ghana received a temple in Accra, in 2003!
